Visualizing Doctor Who Audio Stories in Blender

1

Adrian Parkinson writes:

Studio Big Finish produces audio dramas based on the popular British sci-fi series Doctor Who. They put some of their stories up for free on Spotify, Soundcloud, and other platforms.

Fans of the series have long requested animated versions of its spin-off audio dramas. Over the years, multiple fans have taken it upon themselves to animate various scenes from these stories.

I have produced two such clips. I use a custom build of Blender called GooEngine, which adds several important tools for NPR rendering. For animation, I use a mix of motion capture and hand-keying.

  1. Interesting! I like the designs here. Often when an animated thing is based on something in a performed medium, people stray too close to mimicking the exact appearances of the actors — but /these here/ are expressive and look good in their own right. /And/ they take into account the way light works — that it differs on different materials, and that the shapes it makes are part of the design as well
