How to Turn Blender into Substance Painter (with Free Download)

3

Edwin Spiegel explores how he can emulate some of Painter's capabilities using Blender's shader nodes.

In this high-speed video, he shows how he set up the following masks:

  • AO mask - for adding dirt and creases.
  • Edge mask - creating work out edges.
  • Top/bottom mask - adding dust ect.
  • Height mask - constraining a texture based on the height on the model.

Of course Substance Painter can do much more and with greater ease, but it's nice to see that with a little elbow grease and perseverance you can achieve similar results in Blender.

You can download the node group here.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.
