In the Behind the Scenes series, I'm inviting artists to talk about the creation of one of their works. I haven't featured any of Robert Harris' work before, but I kept seeing his work on deviantArt. I decided to invite him to talk about his work.
First I would like to thank you for the invitation to share about my art.
My name is Robert Harris, I was born in Trinidad & Tobago and I currently reside in Toronto, Canada. I am primarily a character designer, I do work as a freelancer and I am currently writing and illustrating my own children books.
Inspiration
Art has always given me a sense of self, from the age of six art became a very passionate and important part of my life. Coming from a life of poverty, I have dedicated my life to the well being of children. Through my stories, experience and illustrations I cover real life issues cultivating inspiration and food for the soul.
I admire and gain inspiration from artist like Dick Bruna, Dr. Seuss, Maurice Sendak, who share their life through their art. Valuing life and simplicity.
Creation Process
I am a vivid dreamer and it's the main source of my ideas and inspiration. I can visualize an idea no matter how vague from my head directly into 3D, this has helped me kept my characters fresh and unique. I value Simplicity and it has always been my style and way of working, I believe less is more.
Box modelling is my preferred method of modelling, it gives me full control of where I want to add details and form. Keeping my meshes as low as possible without loosing personality and edge flows.
I explore different body types, exaggerating certain aspects to enhance character and personality.
I use a simple material setups on my characters, consisting of a (Diffuse,Velvet,Fersnel and Mix Shader) node setup.
I use cycles exclusively for my renders, with a studio setup and custom nodes I am able to achieve the vibrant clean appearance I like for my characters.
Special thanks to Bart Veldhuizen for the opportunity to share about my art.
You're welcome, Robert ;-)
