Behind the Scenes: Pinocchio Unmasked

0

INTRODUCTION

Hi! I'm Thiago Soares (TySoares), a 3D artist from Brazil. My main focus is on modeling 3D characters that I've drawn inspiration from or that have been lingering in my mind for a long time. I freelance in my free time. Additionally, I freelance my 3D artwork , taking on various projects to bring my creative ideas to life.

INSPIRATION

I started the modeling of this artwork right after the release of the last 2 Pinocchio movies (the Disney version and the Del Toro version), but I only had time to finish it now. The inspiration came from the series of images called "Icons Unmasked" by Alex Solis.

REFERENCES

I collected some references from the classic Pinocchio, Del Toro's version, and some shots from other artists.

MODELING

I used ZBrush for the character evolution, sculpting, posing, and poly-painting. I began with the basic modeling of the character's shapes and then gave it the desired pose. Once satisfied with the pose, I sculpted in the finer details. Additionally, I poly-painted the character before exporting it.

After importing the decimated model with poly-paint in Blender, I lit it with some basic lighting and started to assemble the scenery.

SCENE

The ground material and HDRI are from Polyhaven.

For scene setup, I used a sun lamp and the light coming from the HDRI. I aimed to create something resembling the movie poster from my reference.

COMPOSITION

After that, I proceeded to render the scene in Blender using Cycles. However, the raw render had a slight color issue, which prompted me to perform some compositing. For this, I used Photoshop to handle composition, color correction, and the addition of the background image.

And that was it! The process was short and simple because it was mostly just modeling and sculpting the character.
