This tutorial by Frédéric van der Essen explains all the new hair features in the latest Blender releases: static particles, force fields, curve guides and vertex weight painting to determine hair length and density.
You can download the video from the Blender website. While you're at it, there is also this demo file by Matt Ebb.

Cheers, Matt!
Nice tutorial, one thing though is unmentioned and another could be irritating. a) How do address a force field to a selected object - does this work anyway? b) Mention that you have to create different vertex groups, for newbees the vertex groups just 'pop up' somehow. More of this stuff is required, thanks Matt.
