Visual Effects for Speak Syria

Overmind Studios break down a number of VFX scenes they did for the film "Speak Syria".

Tobias Kummer | Overmind Studios writes:

Hey there!

We (Overmind Studios) were commissioned to do some VFX work for the film "Speak Syria".
It required all sorts of techniques - 2D+3D tracking, compositing, denoising.

Here's the breakdown reel:

Blender was used in conjuction with After Effects to complete the job. Not because it couldn't be done in Blender entirely, but because only 50% of the team uses Blender, the other half is in the After Effects camp ;)
Specifically, Blender was used for the following shots in the reel:

  • Removal of a guy walking in the background (0:10). This was a pretty easy one. Made a clean plate and tracked it onto the footage again.
  • Insertion of fire and smoke (0:29). Compositing of fire, smoke and some fake reflections in the background. Also quite straightforward - masking out some areas, insertion of fire and smoke assets and animation of a reflection on the round tower behind the wall.
  • Drone flyby part one (0:38). This shot is 2D tracked only (because the drone has to fly by quite far in the background, so no full 3D tracking was necessary (and it would also be quite a nightmare to track in 3D). The drone itself was modelled in low poly with a subsurf-modifier stacked on top, blurred a bit and animated from left to right. Also the hills had to be masked to properly integrate the cgi.
  • Drone flyby part two (1:48). This one was a bit harder to get right. The shot is tracked in 3D which was not easy to get right - there are almost no trackable foreground objects except some grass. There is still some jumping involved in the tracks, but fortunately in places where the drone position is not affected.

For more information contact [email protected]. The film will air in German national television soon (I don't know the date as of yet though).

If there is special interest in a particular shot, I might do a tutorial for it. Just let me know! :)
