Clement Foucault strikes again! One of the most anticipated Eevee improvements, better Depth of Field, has just been implemented!
This new implementation, which is a complete refactor, produces higher quality results while giving more flexibility to the user. It also aims to fix the following problems in the old DOF , as outlined by Clement:
- Too much overdraw (low performance).
- Not enough precision in render targets (hugly color banding/drifting).
- Poor resolution near in-focus regions.
- Wrong support of orthographic views.
- Missing alpha support in viewport.
- Missing bokeh shape inversion on foreground field.
- Issues on some GPUs.
This newest development is part of the EEVEE roadmap to make the engine ready for production level work, which has already seen major updates in the past few months such as motion blur support, cryptomatte and AOV support, and more.

yeah has it been implemented already in any of the versions? if so anyone knows which one?
It’s in a testing branch at the moment. I built a version for macOS here:

Hopefully someone can do windows/Linux versions (Or it gets added to master soon). Was my first time building blender and wasn’t too hard if you’re keen to try.
