Interview: LegoMe - Popular movies, but in LEGO

1

14 year old(!) LegoME creates movie tributes using LEGO figures, often publishing more than one new video a month. Their YouTube channel is worth checking out - the movies range from Stranger Things to Spiderman (a lot of Spiderman, actually!), The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Deadpool! This made me curious and I asked them some questions.

You write that you're 14 years old - when did you start learning? What were your favorite resources?

I started learning when I was 7 years old. My dad used to use Blender to design machines for his work, which is how I found out about the software. I quickly figured out that Blender could be used to make animated movies, and that's where I got hooked. I was super invested and immediately got to work on finding out how to use it. I watched a ton of YouTube videos, but some of the stuff I learnt was also self-taught.

You create about two videos a month, that output is amazing! How long do you work on each video?

The average amount I spend on a video can range from 3 days to 3 weeks. It really depends on the scale of the animation. The video that took me the longest to make was my Stranger Things 4 scene recreation video, as it was my first really ambitious project.

What is your most used Blender modeling or animation technique?

Usually when I'm animating in LEGO, I'll switch the animation interpolation to "constants". That way, the rig will stay still until it gets to the next keyframe. I find this tool really helpful for making LEGO move on twos.

Do you have any tips for our readers?

One tip that I'll say is to try and be consistent with your learning. Being "on-and-off" isn't too good because you'll probably forget stuff, but if you be consistent, you can pretty much achieve anything.

I have a LONG history with Blender - I wrote some of the earliest Blender tutorials, worked for Not a Number and helped run the crowdfunding campaign that open sourced Blender (the first one on the internet!). I founded BlenderNation in 2006 and have been editing it every single day since then ;-) I also run the Blender Artists forum and I'm Head of Community at Sketchfab.
