Alan originally trained as a cabinet maker in the shipyards in Scotland. For the last 20 years he has worked in the commercial furniture industry where he has held several senior positions.
In 2000 he moved to Australia after being offered a position with Herman Miller.
He is deeply involved in protecting and extending the legacy of Herman Miller’s legendary designers, Charles and Ray Eames. He has done this by being instrumental in organizing speaking engagements through out Asia for Eames Demetrios, Principal of the Eames Office and grandson of Charles and Ray.
He has also helped to create exhibitions on several aspects of Eames work including furniture, photography and to honour the 100th Anniversary of Charles Eames birthday. These exhibitions have been held through out Asia including Beijing, Brisbane, Taipei, Shanghai and Melbourne with more exhibitions in Hong Kong, Indonesia and in Ahmedabad, India later this year
Alan speaks regularly to clients, students and the architect & design community through out Asia on the Eames legacy and Herman Miller’s leading stand on innovation and environmental design.
