Matt Malone began formal studies in visual art at The Queensland College of Art, Griffith University, in 2000, following an earlier career in the construction industry. Upon graduating in 2002 he was selected to show as part of the Institute of Modern Art’s annual ‘Fresh Cut’ exhibition of graduating artists.
The years following he focused on professional activities, gaining experience with the installation of exhibitions, curatorship and gallery management.
A small solo showing at Alison Kubler and Nadine Cameron’s ‘One Night Only’ in 2007 lead to his first solo showing in a public gallery. ‘On Top’, an exhibition of paintings, opened in late 2008 at the Logan Art Gallery.
In 2009 he presented two solo exhibitions, ‘Logos’ at George Petelin Contemporary Art Projects in Fortitude Valley with David Spooner, and ‘Poetics’ at Flipbook Gallery, West End.
In 2010 he will exhibit at the Bundaberg Regional Gallery and continue to show regularly in local group exhibitions.
He believes the biggest challenge facing artists in the early years of their careers is to maintain the right balance between the necessity for paid work and their studio practice.
In late 2008 he founded Old Space as artist studios and a makeshift exhibition space in Bowen Hills. Old Space has since presented three group exhibitions: ’99 Reasons’, ‘World’s best practice’ and 'Something or other', and exhibited the work of over 20 artists. Old Space aims to present the work of local Brisbane artists in a informal setting that promotes experimental practice outside the constraints of a commercial or public gallery system. Ten artists maintain regular studios at the space.
Matt Malone currently maintains a part-time position in the exhibitions team at the University of Queensland Art Museum, Brisbane.
